Those little 115v wire welders that you see at Lowes and Home Depot are selling like hotcakes. Home Depot seems to always stock the Lincoln Electric Weld Pak HD. And Lowes seems to always have the Lincoln Electric Pro Core 125 MIG/Flux-Corded Welder. Every time I visit Lowes or Home Depot, I cant help but notice that the welding supply shelves have grown like crazy in between my frequent visits. My theory is that cable TV shows like Orange County Choppers and Monster Garage and helped to bring welding and fabrication more into mainstream Americana and have even created quite a buzz around welding and fabrication. It seems like every red blooded American male with an ounce of testosterone in his gonads wants to make something out of metal and the only real way to do that is with a welding machine. Having a welder in your garage also gives some serious bragging rights and makes you think you have a lot more friends than you really do, (kind of like having a Bass boat).

But the thing that scares me a little and should scare a lot of folks is that there is no welding police. No one to blow the whistle and stop people from welding stuff they shouldnt oughta weld. Its kind of like a sixteen year old being free to stroll into a motorcycle shop and ride off on a crotch rocket that will do 180 mph. I guess that is part of living in Free America.

What a country!

These little wire welders do have some limitations. Lets be clear about that. There are just some jobs you should not tackle with a 115v mig welder.

But take heart. There are many jobs that you can do, and do well with one of these 115v welding machines.

The purpose of this article is to explain how to get the most out of your 115v wire feeder welding machine and to make sure you are getting proper penetration in what you are welding.

First off, if you are going to weld a thin sheet metal quarter panel patch for a Nissan Altima, no worries. Penetration will be the least of your concerns. But if you are thinking about welding something heavier like a home-built Hummer Kit using 3 inch square tubing with 3/16 inch wall thickness, that is something else entirely. This is a situation where you will really be pushing the limits of any 115v wire feed welder.

I think anytime something is welded that that would probably injure someone if the welds fail, a 220-230v MIG welding machine should be used. That said there are still going to be occasions where people will need to push the limits of their 115v MIG welding wire feed welders.

Here are 7 things you can do that will help to increase your chances of penetration when you really need it.

1. Use flux core wire like Hobart Fabshield 21b and set the machine to max voltage, then adjust wire feed accordingly. Flux core just plain penetrates better that bare wire on 115v wire feeders. Make sure you follow the recommendations on the wire for polarity. A lot of disappointment has come from not changing the polarity when required.

2. Plug into a dedicated 20 amp circuit. Most household circuits are 15 amp. You might have a 20 amp in your garage. If not, consider getting one.

3. Do not, I repeat, do not use an extension cord. If you must use one you better use the shortest and thickest one you can find to avoid a power drop. Even then your machine will probably weld like it has been castrated. Get it? No balls. Ok moving on to #4.

4. Preheat the joint even if it is with a little propane torch, warming a joint up to even 150 degrees is like having another 10% extra amperage.

5. Do not weld downhill. Instead, weld uphill. Vertical uphill welds get more penetration than any other position joint because gravity keeps the puddle behind the arc.

6. Clean the metal with a grinder. Not having to penetrate through hot rolled mill scale, rust, or paint will greatly increase your penetration.

7. Get some small pieces of metal of the same thickness as the welding task at hand and weld a T joint. Then break it with a vise and a hammer. If it breaks easily you have problems and need to adjust the machine and/or technique until you can weld several joints that either do not break, or if they do break, show good penetration in the corner of the joint.

If you follow these 7 welding tips for getting better penetration with your 115 volt wire feed welder, you will be getting the most out of your mig welder.

Who Needs Workbench Plans?

Today my knees are really killing me, again. Even after promising myself that I would never try to build something on the floor, last night I was in the basement, back down on the concrete trying to replace the belt on a vacuum cleaner. I tried to make the job more tolerable by tossing down one of those foam pads you see for working in the garden. I even tried throwing down some old pillows and blankets, but nothing seemed to really work. Then I started thinking about those professional-style knee pads I always see at Lowes – which I always walk past because I think I’ll only use them once.

So today I decided that what I really need is a way to get my work up off the floor and keep it at a reasonable height…something that my back will appreciate. That’s an easy one. But where do I get one? I’m not even sure what “get” means at this point. I suppose I’ve seen a couple of workbench kits at places like Home Depot and Lowes, but I didn’t see much of a selection really. I could buy one of those bright-red, metal frame workbenches that have the particle board top and a pegboard back. Those workbenches would probably be easy enough to set up without too much trouble. That is, if I’m willing to pay the $100 bucks or so to buy it…and, also if I have a way to get those huge boxes into my car.

Build a Workbench or Buy One?

I guess I’m thinking that a simple workbench should be a fairly easy thing to build myself. And doesn’t it make sense to build my own…especially if I’m going to use that workbench to build more stuff? That makes sense. Besides, a lot of the workbenches I’ve seen in other people’s basements look fairly simple…like they’re put together with 2×4s. I could handle that. If only I could remember (or even understand) how everything went together. That’s kind of the problem. Even with my rough sketches of the kind of workbench I think I’d like to build, I’m still a little fuzzy about what kind of joinery I should use in the corners where the legs come together. I’m not an engineer after all, and I don’t want this thing to be wobbling all over the place after I get it set up.

A Little Help with a Plan

What I’m looking for is just a little help with the overall design of the workbench. So with a quick search on Google for “workbench design” and “workbench plans” I’m seeing lots of websites that say they can help me out with a plan… and most of these I can get for free. At first I’m pretty excited that there’s so much to pick from.

Woodworking or Just Work?

First thing I notice with my Web search for workbench plans is that the word “workbench” is mostly about woodworking…which might not be what I’m looking for exactly. Here’s the test: If you have no idea what a mortise and a tenon joint is, then most of the workbench plans that come up in a Google search are probably not what you’re looking for. Nothing against woodworking, really. In fact, I hope someday I can delve into the fine craft of building fine furniture. That would be wonderful. Maybe build a baby crib for a grandkid. If this is something you are leaning towards, then by all means you should consider taking the leap into building (or buying) a nice woodworking bench.

A workbench can be a beautiful pieces of shop furniture, actually. And experienced woodworkers take no greater pride in having a beautiful workbench to show off to their friends. It’s a very passionate kind of hobby, where serious woodworkers get all perky and excited from just a little whiff of sawdust in the air. That kind of thing. But believe me, serious woodworkers pay out the wallet for their woodworking passion. Most really nice woodworking benches (made from hardwoods like oak or maple) will cost you no less than about $500 for a kit (like at Rockler.com) or at least several hundred dollars in wood and materials just to build it yourself. Not to mention that you’ll also need some fairly sophisticated shop tools to build the really nice woodworking benches…like a planer, drill press, router table, that sort of thing.

Something Simple

But back to my original problem, what I need is simply something to get my work up off the floor and at a reasonable height – and not spend a lot of money doing it. The kind of bench I’m talking about goes together with really simple materials…like 2×4s and wood screws that you can buy at Home Depot or Lowes. And this is stuff I might even be able to fit in the back of my hatchback (and save $50 on a delivery charge). Heck, you can even slide 2×4s in the back trunk with some cars (if you have an open panel behind the back seats).

But I’m not ready to head off to the lumber store just yet. I still need to have a rough idea how the 2×4s should go together, and then how many of the boards I’ll need to buy once I get there. This is where at least some type of workbench plan can come in handy, especially if you want to get started right away on the project. Believe me, starting off with someone else’s design can remove a lot (and I mean a lot ) of the guesswork you’d otherwise be facing if you design your bench from scratch.

Finding a Simple Workbench Plan

If you haven’t already noticed, there are tons of websites on the topic of building a workbench. However, be ready to do some digging to find the kind of simple workbench design I’ve been talking about so far. Remember, most “workbench” plans you’ll find on the Web are designed for some pretty serious woodworking. They might look nice, but be prepared for instructions that want you to do work on a planer, a drill press, a router table, and some other tools I’ve never heard of.

Free Plans?

The next thing you’ll notice with your online search is that a lot of the listings advertise free plans. Believe me, I’ve meticulously gone through these “free workbench plans” websites and I can tell you without hesitation that this stuff is mostly junk. Like a lot of stuff on the Web, it’s simply a ploy to get you interested in looking at something else…like a new cell phone or a free credit report.

A Better Plan…under $10

My opinion in regard to workbench plans overall is that you’re better off to spend the $5-$10 and get something that more resembles what a real workbench plan should be-step-by-step instructions with nice illustrations, cutting diagrams, and shop tips and techniques. What I’m talking about here are plans that have at least five pages of content (unlike the photo-copied isometric drawings that some free sites have) and some reasonably good-quality photos of the finished product. The photos alone can be real life savers when you’re trying to put everything together the way it should go together.

A DIALOG WITH YOUR WORK

It is important for anyone launching an art career to have a direction toward their development and to keep that development alive. The very act of creativity can be dulled or detoured by an artist presupposing future works. The dialog an artist has with your work changes with each new piece. Each successive work causes an adjustment in direction: a revelation, an inspiration that alters the creative path. It seems that creative work has a life of its own which grows and is nourished by communication with its creator.

AVOID BECOMING AN ASSEMBLY LINE

It is possible to work successfully, heedless of the changes inspiration and innovation bring on. This often happens when an artist finds a successful and profitable “niche” and repeats over and over the same subject matter, style and techniques of working over a period of years. The market will always want the same or similar product, to guarantee a reliable value. It is regrettable, however, that many artists in this creative stasis, refuse to develop their full capabilities and are forever tied to the intrinsic values of their work.

KEEP IN TOUCH WITH WHAT’S HAPPENING

The “art scene” is competitive only to those that want it that way. As a artist develops a body of work, having a perspective of other artists’ work is not only a good way to share creative energy, but a relationship that keeps individual work vital. Being aware of what is happening in galleries and events locally, nationally and globally can inspire an emerging artist to move their creative work in a different direction, address different subject matter and change an attitude towards personal artwork relative to the work of other artists.

PARTAKE OF THE RESOURCE BUFFET

There are many resources that can be useful for artistic development, including: art magazines, local and national galleries and online art newsletters and forums. This information should not be intimidating. Frequently, an emerging artist is in a fragile tier of development. Being defensive or put off by investigating the art world restricts personal perspectives. One should look at these resources as a buffet and choose the lovely morsels that will nourish personal creative growth. There is also, a strength and great camaraderie in having relationships with other artists, showing in group shows, becoming a member of a local coop gallery, and participating in art auctions and fairs. Each artist finds their own degree of involvement, whether it is commitment to a highly social scene or minimum input from a local gallery or several friends.

FRESH EYES

Being able to see your work objectively at a distance and up on a wall is a good way to start examining your artistic direction. Choose an area where you can step back at least fifteen feet from your work. Try to arrange your work in some kind of order, for example, earliest work to later work, groups of similar subject matter or stylistic changes, etc. Put everything up–all sketch and studies on paper, all canvases completed or partially finished. All notations and drawing concerning your work. In addition, other artists and friends can offer valuable perspectives regarding your work.

VITAL CHECK LIST

Below is a check list of questions to ask yourself about your work. Do this periodically to keep in touch with your development.

What time period does this body of work represent? (Was all of it completed in a period of five months, a year?)

What did I learn between the earliest work and my last painting?

Which works do I consider successful and why?

Which works do I consider not very successful and why?

What direction am I taking?

What do I want to accomplish in the next three months?

Would I consider submitting my work for exhibition?

What can I do to make my work stronger and more effective?

Is there anyone I would like to contact to look at my work?

I recommend printing out the questions and writing your answers after each question. Date the paper and keep it in a folder. Decide how often you are going to review your work and periodically ask and answer the questions (I think that a review every month is appropriate.)

READY TO SHOW YOUR WORK?

Traditionally, paintings have been judged by certain criteria, however, today, the criteria is not so standardized. You may have found out that galleries have their own criteria for accepting the work of artists based on saleability within the gallery’s market. Large exhibits and juried art shows often follow the guidelines of whoever is judging and depending upon who that is, the guidelines can represent many differing preferences and interpretations. Most galleries have their own guidelines for accepting or rejecting an artist’s work. For example, a gallery that shows contemporary work may not want to consider the work of an artist doing traditional paintings. Also, a small, local gallery will be more receptive to a broad range of work by local artists, whereas a prestigious city gallery will want well-known artists on their roster.

OVERVIEW OF “THE SCENE”

In retrospect, today’s artists are relatively unencumbered by the rules and regulations of the past with regard to how a painting should look and how long it should last. The contemporary artist may be involved with multi-media or conceptual expression. Many creative venues today don’t even have a category and as artists research new frontiers of creativity, judging criteria becomes more specific and, in many cases, applicable to just one unique artwork.

WIDE OPEN SPACES

If you are an experienced artist with many well developed skills, working in your own studio in complete creative freedom is a dream come true. The learning boundaries break away and a vista of personal growth and progress is now open before you. Do you revel in the fresh wind of freedom sweeping past you on this vast plain, or does the open space look a bit daunting? Stand still, for a moment. Listen to the silence and let it speak to you. Listen to the distant wind across the vast fertile plain of your creative mind, take in the fresh air and be nourished by it!

Getting Married? Overwhelmed by all the decisions and the outrageous costs? This can help! Here are a couple of ideas for beautiful centerpieces that would cost you your budget.

Smoke and Mirrors

This is very simple and very elegant look. Simply place a mirrored placemat or even a mirrored tile on each guest table.

Then place an odd number of candles (probably 3 or 5) on top of the mirror. The candles can be pillar candles of different heights or if you prefer candlestick holders, choose holders of different heights and use the long candlesticks. Choose a color that is neutral or one that complements your colors. Do not get heavily scent candles! This will distract from dinner!

Finally if you want a little more festivity, sprinkle rose petals around the mirror.

For the Wedding party table. You can do the same thing, only use more candles and consider even putting these onto stands to give them height.

Where to find it: You can usually find the placemat at a home decor store (like Trends and trees or hobby lobby) or the tiles at a Home store (like Lowes or Home Depot). The candles do not need to be expensive. Go to a Wal-mart or other discount store to see what you can find. For the petals, simply call a florist and ask if they have any aging roses that you could purchase at a discount. They should be happy to have something to do with these roses that are starting to brown. Just pull off the browning petals and use the rest. Or if you don’t want the expensive of real petals, purchase some fake rose petals while you’re at the home decor store.

Living in a Fish Bowl

Can’t have candles in your reception hall? This might work for you instead. Place 10-12in glass bowl, usually used for floral arrangements (kind of looks like a fish bowl). in the center of each Guest table. In the bowl place decorative rocks/stones and fill with water.

Choose some open flowers (not buds) that complement your bouquet choice by using similar family of flowers and/or similar colors. Cut the stem so it is less than an inch long. Place just a few flowers in each bowl; you don’t want to over crowd. (If you can use candles, a couple of floating candles here add a nice touch!).

For the Wedding party table, we will use your wedding bouquet. Select a tall clear vase that is a little shorter than your bouquet( not including stems). Once you arrive at your table, place your bouquet in this vase. It keep your bouquet fresh and out of the way. If you have a particularly long table, you can purchase long clear containers and fill them the same as the bowls above. Place these along the front edge of the table on either side of the bouquet vase.

Where to find it: You can usually find the bowls and the stones at a home decor store (like Trends and trees or Michaels) or go to a Wal-mart or other discount store to see what you can find. They do not need to be expensive. For the flowers, try a superstore or even a Costco/Sams for the cheapest flowers. You can sometimes find a florist outlet where you can get great deals. Or if you don’t want the expensive of real flowers, purchase some fake flowers while you’re at the home decor store.

Put it all together and you have an elegant table setting!

What your company takes as truth is not the fuel of preference and choice. The reason for this is that truth is not universal, it is in fact a product of perspective — and there are as many perspectives in the world as there are places to stand. Every one of your customers sees the world from their own personal vantage point.

As a marketer, do not be overly caught up in the product or service benefits that you consider TRUE differentiators or benefits over the competition. Leave the self-delusion to your competitors and grab every advantage that their blindness offers you. A dispassionate viewpoint when viewing your own brand will give you more than just a heads-up, it may very well propel your brand to dominance.

Home Depot –”The Home Depot provides our customers with excellent service every time they come into our stores. We offer the right products, the right selection, the right prices and a team of associates passionate about your needs. We build lasting relationships by helping customers realize their dreams and growing their trust through our products and services.”

As a category, the home improvement super stores have succeeded in squeezing the local hardware store and building supply companies. Their volume and pricing has changed the way national hardware retailers like True Value and Ace Hardware must do business, but the focus that brought about a sea change in the way home owners shop for the ever broadening category of home improvement products does little to take market share from ether of the big two.

Today they have relegated their competitive practices to promotions and location. In both cases, even these poor attempts at preference has become harder to differentiate as they seem to follow each other in the location of store openings.

This is the truth in the home improvement category. However, you can be assured that Lowe’s and Home Depot disagree with our assessment. They see real and truthful differences between themselves and their competitor. Maybe one is sure they have better name brands. According to State Treasurer Sarah Steelman, Missouri unclaimed money has grown to the massive sum of $400 million. This pile of cash is likely to grow, as with most states, Missouri takes in more unclaimed property annual than they return to the citizens. Among the variety of reasons why these funds remain unclaimed, is the fact that most people are unaware of unclaimed property, and those that are don’t know the proper way to search.

With MO unclaimed money rolls approaching a half of a billion dollars, the “Show Me State” ought to change its name to the “Show Me The Money State”. So where does all that money come from? There are many dozens of different types of sources for unclaimed property, but some of the most common are abandoned bank accounts, safe deposit boxes, checks that have not been cashed, certificates of deposit, forgotten stocks, life insurance policies.

While there is no time limit on claiming missing money, Missouri only guarantees that they’ll hold items from safe deposit boxes for 1 year (though they do sometimes hold them for longer). Obviously for those people who use (or have used) safe deposit boxes, it’s important to quickly get your search started if the items have a sentimental value to you, but at least you’ll get the money if they sell your items. Luckily for the rest of us, most of the money doesn’t come from unclaimed property auctions.

Whether you’re a current or former Missouri resident, or in some cases, have never lived in Missouri at all, the odds that lost money is owed to you, are in your favor. And the best part about money from unclaimed funds is that the money already belongs to people. There are no games or gambling involved. The only thing keeping missing money from becoming found money, for most people, is their knowledge about where to search, and how to search.

Countless myths exist about unclaimed property. The most common is that performing a simple online search on any old website constitutes a full search.
