Horror stories abound everywhere. Novice DIY Homeowners trying to remodel their kitchen or bathroom who take on a project bigger than they can handle. Remodeling your own kitchen or bathroom can be a very rewarding project and you can save a ton of money, but buying the wrong cabinets can lead to disaster. Home Improvement stores and the name brand manufacturers have done a very good job of selling the accessories and styles of cabinets, while at the same time taking the focus away from what the cabinet is actually made of. Stores like Ikea offer a wide range of RTA cabinets in all of the most popular styles and do a very good job of helping you select everything you will need for your project. What they fail to do is talk about how hard it will be to actually assemble the cabinets or what the box of the cabinet is made of.

A quality cabinet, whether it is a customer cabinet or RTA cabinet, will be constructed of plywood or solid wood. Ikea cabinets and even the pre-assembled cabinets sold at Lowes and Home Depot, are traditionally made of particle board or fiberboard with a veneer or laminated cover. The problem with fiberboard and particle board is that it acts like a sponge when it comes in contact with water, which leads to bubbling or warping. While the face frame and doors of these cabinets may be solid wood, it is the cabinet box that is going to add stability to the cabinet. The other issue with cabinets made of these materials, is that the screws, staples, or nails that are used to hold the cabinets together, have a tendency to lose their grip, since the material is not solid. The combination of all these attributes will significantly shorten the life of your cabinets.

Another issue that DIY Homeowners don’t realize is that not all RTA cabinets are assembled the same way. A quality one will come complete with all of the pieces in one box, with simple assembly instructions, and should only require a screwdriver to assemble. A neighbor of mine thought that she found the kitchen of her dreams at Ikea…. everything was great until she got the cabinets home. Literally every piece came in a separate box (hinges in one box, doors in another box, screws in another box). It literally took her 3 days to layout, and identify all of the different pieces for each cabinet. By the time she got down to the last couple of cabinets, pieces were missing, extra pieces were left… assembling RTA cabinets doesn’t have to be that difficult. I installed some in my kitchen that I bought on-line and it was super easy. Each cabinet showed up in it’s own box, all of the pieces were included. The cabinet locked together using cam locks which only required a screw driver. In 3 hours I was able to assemble the same amount of cabinets that took my neighbor 3 days to layout.

So when considering RTA cabinets for your kitchen or bathroom, don’t fall into the common pitfalls that hundreds of other homeowners have faced when buying the wrong cabinets. Do some research on the ones that are available, both on the internet and in the stores. Inspect the materials they are made of, how they are assembled, and finally the overall cost (make sure there are no hidden costs from having to buy extra parts). Don’t get scammed by low grade RTA cabinets.

Soundproofing your home does not have to cost a fortune. If you are under new construction we all know that money it tight. There are many common hardware store items that can be used for soundproofing that won’t break the bank. Most people don’t think of sand as a soundproofing material, but it actually a very good for soundproofing. If your walls are re-enforced, you can use sand in the stud cavities as a soundproofing material. You must be sure that your walls can withstand the weight of the sand. Always use refined or purified sand, not common beach sand that could cause mold or have other bacterial in it that will cause you problems down the line.

Let’s say you are in the middle of new construction on your new home and you know that one of the rooms is going to be your new home theater. You want that room soundproofed but you budget is already stretched to its limits. Did you know that you can use common rolled roofing material from Home Depot or Lowe’s? Rolled roofing is what is generally used on buildings like chicken coops and other roofs where aesthetics is not an issue but stopping leaks is. Rolled roofing generally comes in 30′ long rolls and is 3′ wide. I hear the little wheels in your brain spinning at a hundred miles and hour. What am I going to do with all this rolled roofing material? Well, I’m glad you asked. One of the best soundproofing agents on the market today is mass loaded vinyl, (MLV for short) Mass loaded vinyl is a high grade vinyl material that is impregnated with barium salts and silica to give it the same soundproofing properties as lead sheeting without the hazards associated with lead.

Now MLV can cost from $1.25 to $2.00 per sq ft and when you are building your new dream home that just might be beyond your budget. So now enters the rolled roofing material. I am suggesting that you stretch the rolled roofing material across the studs or the joists if you are soundproofing your ceiling. You will staple or nail the rolled roofing directly to the stud structure like a membrane across the face of the studs. The next section of rolled roofing should overlap the first piece by at least 1″. It is essential to caulk the over lap with an acoustical caulk (hey you have to buy something from the soundproofing guy for giving you all this free advice, right?). The acoustical caulk can be purchased from any reputable soundproofing company like Acoustical Solutions, Sound Isolation Company, or Soundproofing America. Any of these companies will carry a good quality acoustical caulk and can ship it to you. Now back to our soundproofed walls. Once you have the rolled roofing in place and you have caulked the 1″ over lap, you will also need to caulk around the entire perimeter of the newly installed rolled roofing membrane. There is a little saying we have in the soundproofing industry, “Caulk is cheap”. I think you get the pun. The point is, use as much caulk as you need to seal every seam gap or crack in your soundproof membrane. You want this roofing material to be as sealed and air tight as possible. Now seeing as the rolled roofing does not have the same soundproofing horsepower as MLV, I would strongly suggest a second layer of the rolled roofing be applied to each wall and to the ceiling area that you that you are soundproofing. Stagger the seams wherever possible This is a small investment to have a soundproof room for your home theater or simply a quiet place to study.

Once you have your 2 layers of rolled roofing installed on your walls and ceiling and everything is caulked liberally, it is time for the finished layer of drywall. I would suggest installing a layer of 5/8″ fire code drywall to finish off your soundproofing project. Don’t forget to tape mud and paint the finished drywall.

Now finally I would like to say a little bit about the acoustical caulk. Acoustical caulk is a cheap commodity when compared to the cost of other soundproofing agents, but it is one of the most essential parts of any soundproofing endeavor. Buy a good acoustical caulk and not some cheap silicone caulk. We are already being frugal with the soundproofing material; lets not skimp on the caulk. A good acoustical caulk is OSI-175 SC caulk or Tremco Smoke and Sound caulk. Both of these caulking compounds possess superb acoustical properties. If you have questions about acoustical caulk call one of the online soundproofing companies, they will be glad to help you.

Once the drywall is up and the rolled roofing is completely covered, you will discover that you have a well-soundproofed room and you did it a half the cost of using the professional soundproofing agents. That being said, today’s modern soundproofing products are extremely effective and I feel very reasonably priced compared to other specialized building materials. In this article I just wanted to show that there are other ways to soundproof a wall or ceiling with out using the more costly professional soundproofing agents. I hope this narrative has been informative; it was a pleasure writing it, as there is so little information out on the net about soundproofing. Once again, this is Dr. Bob…Out!

Expanded polystyrene, also known as EPS, consists of a mixture of 90-95% polystyrene and 5-10% gaseous agent, generally pentan or carbon dioxide. The plastic that forms expands into foam after being exposed to some form of heat, which is typically steam heat.

Machines use pre-cut wires and molds vaporize expanded polystyrene foam. This allows the foam to be cut in a variety of styles, from straight edges and linear shapes to curves and circular or asymmetrical shapes. It can take on nearly any angle, shape or size.

With the explosion of Internet sales and the trend persisting, businesses nowadays heavily rely on shipping in order to present their stock to customers that can be widespread throughout the country or world even. Businesses and individuals also often ship products in order to get important valuables from place to place. Expanded polystyrene has become popular for both of these reasons. The lightweight, flexible, and protective qualities of the material make it a popular choice for shipping. Businesses that do a good deal of shipping often purchase expanded polystyrene foam in bulk to further cut costs and because secure shipping is of the utmost priority to maintain business.

If you are interested in the expanded polystyrene, you can calculate the cost of the size and density that you need at the website. This quick estimate will show you how inexpensive it is to ship with this foam product. Universal Foam Products is the company that will guarantee the quality of their goods. Natural stone fireplaces are extremely popular among many home owners. If you are looking to add beauty to your home, without the use of heavy types of stones and materials, natural stone is a wonderful choice. This particular type of rock is also referred to as “thinstone”. This is a type of veneer that is cut to ensure quality, yet is extremely lightweight. Many fireplaces have been created using this particular type of material. This is mainly due to the fact that the stone is highly versatile when it comes to color and texture and that it can hold up to a large amount of various conditions as it is so durable. Here, you will be introduced to this building material, as well as some advantages and disadvantages associated with using it.

Advantages of Natural Stone

Many advantages have been associated with stone that is natural. One of the first advantages is that is it suitable to any budget. Being that it is cut relatively thin, this makes an affordable choice for those that have a specific budget outlined for their home improvement and home repair endeavors. The next advantage is that it is lightweight, so it is quite easy to install the pieces with little to no effort. As mentioned previously, there are many different colors and textures available when it comes to selecting thinstone for the home. This product gives the overall appearance of real stone, yet the flexibility of manufactured stone. This is why many homeowners elect to use this for their home improvement projects.

Disadvantages of Natural Stone

When researching any type of building material for the home, it is always a good idea to ensure that you not only research the advantages of using the product, but the disadvantages as well. There are a few points that may be identified as a disadvantage to using natural stone in and around the home. These are as follows:

1. This is a natural manufactured stone. Many individuals prefer to stay away from stone types that are created. If you are looking for a product that is created from rocks obtained naturally, this may not be an ideal choice for you.

2. There is a possibility that the product may experience chipping and scratching. While this is basically a disadvantage, there is a positive side. If chipping or scratching occurs, the stone is created in such a manner that the under surface is the same as the outer surface. This means that it will blend in appropriately.

3. Individuals who use this type of stone may feel that it is not as durable as stones obtained naturally. However, it does have a high tolerance for extreme conditions.

Where to Find Other Natural Stone Fireplace Ideas

If you want to find more natural stone fireplace ideas, there are many different places where you can do so. The internet is loaded with unique designs and ideas for the home. Furthermore, home improvement stores such as Lowe’s and Home Depot often carry a large assortment of books on the subject. If you want to get started on integrating a fireplace into your home, a natural stone fireplace may be the best choice for you!

There are some appliances found in our kitchen that we rely heavily upon but may not really notice, such as refrigerators and freezers, we definitely notice their importance when one of them breaks down though. A fridge or freezer that has lost its cooling power can be disastrous for our food that needs to be kept cool or frozen, some fridges have lights which if their switch becomes faulty can keep the light on and do the exact opposite and actually heat up our food.

This could cause a disaster in your home if you have food that melts such as cheese and as well as ruining your food it may also cause a bad smell to emanate from your kitchen too. There are many times people have come home to notice that their freezer has been turned off too, this is often because of a blown fuse or any other electrical fault, the signs that your appliance may have broken down are often quite apparent with water pooling on the floor and an eerie silence coming from your freezer.

What normally follows is a panicked race against time to get your food out of the freezer and either into a cool box or round to a neighbour or relative who lives close by and has space in their freezer for your food to take refuge. It is important when there is water around electrical items that you switch off the appliance and unplug it from the wall, if this isn’t done then there is a risk of fire or electrical shock which could cause more problems and injuries.

Many people faced with this dilemma will believe the best course of action will be to go out and purchase a replacement as soon as possible. There are some people who go out and buy the first model they see or the cheapest to try and limit the expense that this whole situation will levy upon them. This is unwise as you are less likely to take time to consider what features you need and certainly won’t be comparing the prices at different stories when you are in a hurry.

The smartest solution is to calm down and call on a local appliance repair service to get your fridge or freezer fixed right away. With many years of experience and knowledge over particular appliances and brands these repair engineers are able to fix your fridge or freezer quickly and without any worry that your food will spoil. Engineers come to your home and repair the appliance by either performing servicing or replacing key parts that may have been damaged or expired.

Home Depot employment includes benefits to part-time hourly, full-time hourly and salaried employees. Eligible dependents are also covered under most of the plan choices offered to employees of the company. So while available benefits may not be the main reason a person chooses one employer over another, it can be a strong influence in the decision making process.   Benefits for part-time employees includes medical, dental, vision, short-term disability insurance and life insurance. Benefits for full-time hourly and salaried employees includes medical, health savings account, dental, vision, disability insurance, life insurance, and accidental death and dismemberment insurance. Also available are financial benefits of a 401(k), employee stock purchase plan, direct deposit and a credit union.

Home Depot is ranked at number 25 on the Fortune 500 list of America’s largest corporations. Revenues for the year ending in January of 2009 were over $71 billion and the company employed more than 209,000 people. As of February 1, 2009, the company had 2,233 stores located throughout the United States, including the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the territories of the United States Virgin Islands and Guam, Canada, China and Mexico.

Applying for a job at Home Depot, like any large corporation, requires a specific process and series of steps be followed. A job seeker will have to fill out an application in detail, followed by an in-store job interview, and have to wait out an internal company review before being notified of a hiring decision. The Home Depot employment process can take a bit of time but getting the job is worth the wait.

You’re proud of your fireplace or wood stove – who isn’t? Even when the flames aren’t flickering, fireplaces are beautiful, warm, comforting, romantic, the centerpiece of a fine home, and a throwback to times when the fireplace was the essential fixture in the house. That’s why people place family pictures on a mantle, decorate a wood stove pipe with holiday wreaths, and hang stockings over the hearth. It reminds us of all that’s good and warm.

And if we practice good fireplace safety, the flames throw off only heat and light and let us enjoy the fireplace with with no trouble. But other times, even experienced, smart people may let their guard down. Enjoy the warmth and avoid the trouble by remembering the following:

1. We’re not kidding – open the flue. Sooner or later, it happens to everyone. We know one owner of a winter cabin who, for 20 years, never forgot to open the flu. But as he got older, he stopped vacationing there as much. Just before he sold the house, he fired up his hearth one last time – and forgot to open the chimney flue. He scorched the fireplace, leaving ugly burn marks on the stone front.

Bottom line: Remember to open it. Keep your flashlight handy next to the fireplace so you can quickly do a visual inspection if you aren’t absolutely sure.

2. Don’t put combustibles too close to a fire, stove surfaces, or other heat surfaces. Clutter happens, especially during the holidays. One day you’re keeping newspapers far enough way from a fireplace or wood/coal stove; suddenly, it seems, the flammables are way too close. A fire could throw a spark (or just heat) – and ignite those combustibles.

Especially easy to forget: Stacking combustibles and materials with low flash points next to hot wood and coal stove surfaces. Of course, when you installed the stove, you kept plenty of room between the wall and stove pipe [http://www.chimneylinerdepot.com/store/stovepipe.html] – until someone decided that “temporarily” that’s a great place to put a tall gift box “just to get it out of the way for a moment.”

3. Don’t knock off for the evening without considering the fire. After a long night of building a fire, you may nod off and forget about the fire. If the doors are open, that could lead to the fire spreading. Sure, it’s easy enough to close the fire doors, but no one intends to crash out suddenly.

Best bet: As soon as you feel the fatigue, prepare the fire to go out – stop putting in fuel, close the doors (if possible, separate the ashes and remaining fuel sources within the hearth), and let the fire smolder.

Bonus reminder: Don’t shop vac the ashes from the hearth. It’ll clog the filter, for starters. But worse, ashes that look completely out may be burning just beneath the surface the next day. You’ll discover as soon as you as you start vacuum. And yes, we know at least two people who’ve done this.

When you are getting started it’s so hard to understand the integral role packaging has to play in marketing and selling your product. Put simply, it’s one of the most important product decisions you will have to make. There is a universe of packaging suppliers, materials and even regulations. Not to be overwhelmed, it is easy to navigate if you take it one step at a time. It is a process just like any other component in product development. They key is to know which packaging factors will influence your product’s success –or failure

Here are 5 vital things you need to know as you start on your journey that packages your product to sell.

1. You can’t have a product without a package.

Just think about potato chips and eggs for example. How could you sell them unbroken and undamaged without a package? You have to be able to transport a product from point A to point B. The package is what makes it happen. Even if your product is not fragile, it can’t get into the buyers hands in a shop worn condition. Consumers will NEVER buy it.

It’s interesting how packaging is evolving. In many cases, there would be no product without the package. Take something as simple as toothpaste. Whether it’s in a tube or in a pump the package plays an integral role in making this product work. It is so ordinary that many people never stop to consider this fact: Where would toothpaste be without a package?

So ask yourself these questions: Is your invention going to need a package that is part of the actual product? Or will the packaging be more of a protective device to convey the product?

Whatever the answer might be, it’s time to start thinking about how the packaging is going to impact both shipping and merchandising.

2. The package could cost more than what is inside.

The rule of thumb is that the package should be 8-10% of the total cost on average. 10% of every dollar spent at retail is directly attributable to packaging. But that cost can vary dramatically with the product being packaged. The proportion of cost is lower with high ticket items and higher with commodity items as well as products in which the packaging is a bigger component than the product itself.

Let’s talk potato chips again. Packaging is a much higher cost in an item like this. You have a few chips and a bag but don’t forget that besides the bag there is a master shipping carton that contains the bags of chips. This is one of the hidden costs that many people overlook.

So think about not only the primary package (the one that is going to be seen at retail) but any other packaging materials that you will require to transport, ship or convey your product to its ultimate destination unbroken, not damaged, not tampered with and arriving in pristine condition.

3. Your package has to sell the product not just protect it.

The average consumer spends just 2.6 second making a decision whether to pick up your product or not. So your packaging better be on target to the right audience with the right message. Just stroll through any retail that merchandises similar products to yours. Overwhelmed by the competition? You Bet!

And that’s just the beginning. Who is going to buy your product? Do you know? Are you aware of what language, colors, design and packaging materials that appeals to your target demographic? This can make or break whether your product sells or not. Ask yourself who do I want to buy my product and what packaging attributes will appeal to them?

4. Most packaging materials suppliers require large quantity orders.

It’s hard to find a supplier for small quantities. The double edged sword is that you don’t have large orders when getting started. The number one question I am asked is how to find a vendor for small quantities. In many cases, this can be a challenge but it is not impossible.

I know you have this exotic design concept on your head that’s just going to WOW them at retail. The reality is that in many cases you will have to start with stock packaging items that you can customize. As you get more orders or are able to order in larger quantities you can upgrade your packaging designs.

Don’t be discouraged. The stock design world has come a long way with innovative designs and materials. With a little innovation and creativity, you can have that prestige look on a start up pocketbook.

5. Packaging trends and innovations can influence whether your product will ever get onto the stores shelf.

In January of every year, I write a trends piece about where I believe the packaging industry is going for the year. This covers not only the hottest packaging trends and innovations but outside influences that can drive the retail industry. Many influences can be outside of your control. The secret is in knowing what is going to be the “issue” of the future or what might be mandated as a “must have” in your product packaging.

There are external factors that can dramatically change what the consumer wants or demands in their product packaging. What do you know about RFID, product integrity and product security, bioresins and bio plastics, environmental sustainability, smart or intelligent packaging? If you are like most inventors the answer is not much. But these packaging concerns are the wave of the future. Chances are one or more of these factors will be discussed when your try to get a buyer to commit to carrying your product.

Many requirements mandated but big box retailers such as Wal-Mart and Home Depot drive smaller retailers in the same direction.

I’m not trying to scare or overwhelm you with decisions that you are not prepared to make. I am trying to point out a few of the facts you will need to be aware of and consider in product packaging. The time to address these issues is at the point when you prepare your product for market not at the end when many times it’s too late.

Make your product packaging among the first decisions you make with your idea– not your last. If you need more guidance, check out my packaging websites or come to my Packaging Boot Camp which will answer your “How Do I” questions.

Pointer Excel II Digital Acupuncture & Pressure Point Locator is the newest self-healing gadget to hit the market.  I am a big fan of acupuncture.  I used to visit my acupuncturist every other week but with my hectic schedule at work, I couldn’t insert the time to visit him anymore.  I bought the product to see if it can be a good alternative to visiting the acupuncturist.

Electroacupuncture is the new term for this gadget.  It doesn’t use any needles.  In exchange for the needles, it has a pointed part that can detect acupuncture points and stimulate that point.  When you turn the gadget on and gently let the detection probe run through your palm, the gadget will locate pressure points.  It will flash when it has detected one.  All you need is to stimulate that point by using the same pointed probe.

Is it better than my acupuncturist?  No.  My acupuncturist is the best.  But it’s the second best.  I love that I can do acupuncture on myself any time I want to.  I love the sensation when I stimulate the pressure points that the gadget has detected.  I love that it is handy and that in a way it makes me feel more relaxed.

As for the treatment of aches and pains, my acupuncture session with my acupuncturist is effective but I notice that this digital acupuncture device can improve the little strains and pains in my body.  I always have experience neck pain at work and when I use the pressure point locator and digital acupuncture on my palms and my soles, the neck pain dissipates in a short time.
